9 things to do with the under-9 crowd on EARTH DAY

Posted on April 15, 2022

Most grownups are familiar with the 3 Rs — reducereuse, and recycle.

But it’s important to make sure kids understand their responsibility to care for planet Earth, too.

Every year on April 22nd, Earth Day brings the world together to celebrate, and it’s the perfect time to educate kids about climate change and how they can work to protect our home with Earth Day activities for kids.

Here are 9 things to do with the under-9 set on April 22nd.

Connect with nature

Wouldn't it be fun to take a walk through a local park? The first and best way to celebrate Earth Day is getting outside and exploring nature.

As they explore, kids can birdwatch and observe wildlife in natural habitats found throughout city parks and conservation areas.

Organize an Earth Day scavenger hunt

While kids are exploring nature, have them record what they find!

There are lots of ways to observe and record nature that don’t involve disturbing the environment or taking things out of it. Create a list of things for them to do and spot as they walk, including:

  • Drawing pictures of flowers and plants
  • Spotting birds (and identifying them if they can)
  • Writing down or taking pictures of any wildlife they spot
  • Collecting litter and recycling — with the proper equipment, of course

 Build an insect hotel

Your students can build an adorable hotel for bugs using basic materials you’ll find around the home — and recycle some trash in the process!

What you need:

  • Tree bark
  • Pinecones
  • A large plastic bottle
  • Fallen sticks and twigs
  • Any other earthly elements your kids may want to add

What to do:

  1. Cut the bottle into two pieces to form separated cylinders. Remove the top and bottom pieces, as we will not be using them.
  2. Push holes in the top of the bottle pieces and thread twine to hang when the hotel is completed.
  3. Put twigs, branches, and pinecone pieces inside each bottle. You may need to snap the twigs to shorten them. Fill the bottles.

Hang outside to allow bugs to enjoy their new home.

Grow a love for plants with seed jars

Students love science experiments! Involve kids in making seed jars to honor Earth Day. They'll be able to watch seeds sprout and grow into a flower or vegetable, then plant it in a garden once it’s ready.

What you need:

  • Water
  • Paper towels
  • A clear large jar
  • Seeds (nasturtium, sunflowers, peas, and beans germinate quickly)

What to do:

  1. Fold paper towels and place them inside jars. Allow your students to push the paper towels down into the jar.
  2. Add water slowly into the jar but do not overfill it.
  3. Put seeds on the wet paper towels near the edges of the glass so kids can watch their experiments grow before their eyes

Teach kids to recycle

It's important to get kids interested in saving our planet at an early age. A valuable technique for instilling good recycling habits is to show kids how to sort recyclables.

This is a perfect Earth Day activity for preschoolers or kindergarteners, since it’s a skill they’ll use for the rest of their lives.
Show kids how to separate plastics, metals, cardboard, and glass. Ask them to place each type of recyclable into separate bins.

Reinforce these skills throughout the year at lunchtime, or whenever students have recyclables.

Make a bee and butterfly garden

Bees and other pollinators play an essential role in our food supply. Their decreasing numbers could affect the availability of produce at grocery stores.

Set up a new project for kids with basic instructions on how to plan and build a home garden that attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Give them handouts that contain a list of various plants and shrubs to get them started.

For kids who live in apartments, container gardens are a great space-saving alternative.

Make a coffee filter Earth

Watch kids' amazement as they drop green and blue food coloring on coffee filters to create their own unique artwork of planet Earth! Here's how:

What you’ll need:

  • Newspaper
  • Coffee filters
  • Eye droppers or spoons
  • Blue and green food coloring

What to do:

  1. Take the supplies outdoors under the sun to maximize drying time.
  2. Lay out newspaper on a table or walkway.
  3. Put coffee filters on top of newspapers to catch excess water.
  4. Use eye droppers or spoons to apply drops of food coloring on coffee filters. You can also use blue and green markers for the same effect!
  5. Add a bit of water with a spray bottle to blur the lines between the blue and green and watch as the Earth takes shape.

Create an Earth Day pledge.

Make a list of the things kids would like to do to maintain the health of our environment:

  1. Plant trees
  2. Go paperless
  3. Turn off lights that don't need to be on
  4. Use cloth grocery bags instead of plastic ones
  5. Try shampoo bars instead of the bottled variety
  6. Make cleaning products using lemon and vinegar
  7. Stick to the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
  8. Lower your carbon footprint by reducing trash output
  9. Spend more time outside than playing video games indoors
  10. Use energy-efficient LED bulbs -- they last much longer than traditional bulbs

Or anything else you can think of!

Turn off the TV, put down the devices and phones and GET OUTSIDE!

HAPPY EARTH DAY FROM WATERHOUSE AND MAUMEE SUPPLY

Earth Day should be Everyday but this year, it's on April 22nd

Posted on April 15, 2022

Our Waterhouse logo may be blue but our blood runs green around here.

We recycle.  We re-use.  We upcycle.  We do what we can, when we can to make our showroom, our homes, and our community better places to work, live, and play.

Here's some quick tips from the Waterhouse to help take the sting out of your electric and water bills.

Conserve energy and conserve cash at the same time!

  1. Seal up cracks around doors and windows in your home

Did you know if you add all the neglected cracks and leaks in the average home, it equals the space of a two-foot by two-foot hole?

Heat may be inadvertently seeping out, driving up your energy consumption and bills this winter. Take time to check for gaps around doors and windows and seal them up by caulking or installing weather stripping.

  1. Wait until you have a full load to do laundry

Washing one large load of laundry will take less energy than washing two smaller loads. Most people tend to "under load," rather than overload, their washers. Before washing, check your machine's capacity in pounds and weigh your dirty clothes to ensure that you have a full load.

  1. Re-arrange your furniture to take advantage of natural light

By positioning furniture to maximize light from windows and doors, you'll use less energy to brighten your home. To bring more light in, make sure your window coverings are sheer or pulled back

  1. Make your own household cleaners using natural ingredients

Make your own cleaning products for a safer alternative for furniture polish, all-purpose cleaner. Visit http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/cleaning/tips/a24885/make-at-home-cleaners/ for alternatives to commercial products that you can whip up yourself using borax, washing soda, distilled white vinegar, baking soda, salt, club soda, cooking oil or lemons.

For the not-so-industrious of us, check out some of our very favorite, readily available cleaning products from Wellaroma here:  https://www.wellaroma.com/collections/household-cleaner

  1. Water your yard or garden in the early morning or evening when it's cooler

By watering during cooler hours, you can discourage excessive evaporation from your lawn and garden since the sun won't be able to burn off the moisture, therefore saving hundreds of gallons of water. Also, remember to adjust sprinkler heads and water flow to avoid "watering" those surfaces and structures that don't need H2O.

  1. Check out the Energy Star Home Advisor to get green advice

Visit http://www.energystar.gov/ to learn how to make your home greener. Just enter your ZIP code and basic information about your heating and cooling system, and the Home Advisor will provide you with home improvement projects to increase your energy efficiency and comfort.

  1. Wash your clothes on the cold or warm cycle for energy savings

Stay away from the hot cycle and you'll save on energy — between 80 and 85 percent. And be sure to clean out your dryer's lint filter after each load — it helps it run more efficiently and saves you $40 a year in electricity costs.

  1. Look for Long-Lasting Cleaning Supplies

Forgo single-use products, such as disinfectant wipes or dusting sheets, for reusable options. Invest in cotton washrags and natural-bristle brushes that can be cleaned and used longer.

HAPPY EARTH DAY from the WATERHOUSE TEAM!

It's 419 in the 419!

Posted on April 18, 2022

It’s 419 in the 419

(That’s 4/19 in the 419 for the uninitiated…)

19 reasons you should choose to shop locally.

Specifically, at Waterhouse (not just on 4/19, but every day.)

Here are 19 reasons to keep your cash close to home:

  1. Keep Money Local—Sales taxes fund our communities and provide vital services such as police and fire protection, street repairs and trash collection. Local businesses are more likely to shop with other local businesses, keeping money moving in our local economy even longer.
  2. Local Investment—Local businesses are less susceptible to national downturns and more likely to work harder to stay open. Local ownership means that important decisions are made by people who live in our community and feel the impact of those decisions. The Waterhouse team all lives here, works here, and plays here.
  3. It reduces your carbon footprint--One of the key reasons it’s worth shopping locally is that it reduces your environmental impact. Locally owned businesses make more local purchases, requiring less transportation. Waterhouse is right in the middle of Downtown Perrysburg, meaning there’s less sprawl, congestion and habitat loss.
  4. Support for Nonprofits—Local businesses support good work in our community. Studies show that nonprofits receive 250 percent more support from small businesses than large ones. Waterhouse supports everything from Water.org to the Perrysburg Highschool Theater program.
  5. Discover Interesting Things and People—One-of-a-kind shops and restaurants are part of what makes our city a wonderful place to live. On what other block can you get a locally blended juice (Local Roots https://www.localrootsjuiceco.com/), a custom-blended scent (Wellaroma https://www.wellaroma.com/), a life-changing facial (Healing Esthetics by Deb https://www.facebook.com/HealingTouchEstheticsLLC/), to-die-for chicken chunks (Swig https://swigrestaurant.com/) and a custom-color clawfoot tub (Waterhouse https://www.waterhousebks.com/).
  6. Personal Connection—Getting to know the store owners is a great reason to shop local. It’s our business, we are the decision-makers, and we build a personal relationship with our customers.
  7. Product Knowledge—Local business owners are well informed about their products and know what they are selling. Because we know our customers, we can easily adjust our inventories to include the goods and services the 419 wants to buy.
  8. Diverse Products—Local stores carry inventory you might not find at national chain stores. Local business owners choose products based on what our customers want and often carry unique items.

9.  Cost Effective—Sometimes prices at local businesses are better because we don’t have the overhead that larger stores may have, and we may be more willing to negotiate to meet your price needs.

10. Better Experience—Local shopping can translate to more convenient retail experiences.

11. Less “Leakage”—Local businesses tend to buy and sell with other local businesses. With national or multi-national firms, a percentage of that profit ‘leaks’ out of the community, the state or even the nation.

12. Increased Expertise—Shopping at a local store means you can get an expert opinion about the products that you are purchasing. Local shop owners must be experts in their field to compete. Use them—ask them questions and get advice about products. Maumee Supply and Waterhouse have been here for almost 70 years. Ask us anything. If we don’t have the answer right away, you can rest assured that we’ll find it!

13. Create Community—We are a society in constant motion, so people don’t always have a connection with the communities where they live. Ask the locals where they shop. We bet that they'll say "Waterhouse."

14. Better Service—Local business owners do what we do because we are passionate about our products, and we take more time to get to know our customers. We always go the extra mile to help you and to ensure you are a satisfied customer.

15. Support Future Growth--Shopping locally is the best way to show pride in your city and help protect the businesses that make our city unique. By supporting local businesses, you are in turn helping your local economy by creating more jobs. Even a small business needs enough hands to help it sell its products and services, which is why the more we support them, the more jobs will be created and the better off the 419 will be.

16. Maren – Born and raised in the 419, Maren is our resident expert on everything from tile to cute cat videos on YouTube. The most unassuming salesperson you will ever meet, she is low key, low pressure and low maintenance.

17. Jessica – A BGSU graduate, Jessica is our fashionista, our artist, our cool kid. Coming up on 12 months with Waterhouse, Jess can help you with everything AND the kitchen sink.

18. Julie – A 17-year veteran of Waterhouse, Julie helps her clients from the dreaming phase to project completion with ease. She lives in the 419, works out in the 419, and plays in the 419.

19. Amy – The leader of this band, Amy was born and raised in the 419, moved away from the 419 for a really long time and made her way back. She’ll talk to you about anything. Seriously – anything. Come in and test our theory.

Earth Day is just a few days away

Posted on April 15, 2022

It's almost Earth Day so Waterhouse knows that you'll be out enjoying the fresh air and getting dirty planting all of those new trees.

So how are you going to clean up your act?

You know the global benefits of conserving energy and water - including saving on your own costs. But maybe you're not sure where to start. Here are a few ways to embrace earth-friendly practices in your own home and routine.

Remember, even the smallest steps help make a difference.

  1. Upgrade to green

With new government standards and technology, modern faucets are more efficient than ever. Saving up to 32% on your water usage, WaterSense certified faucets make going green practically effortless.

All of Moen's new bath faucets feature a 1.5 gallon per minute (gpm) flow rate which uses up to 32% less water, while still maintaining the same great performance you expect from Moen. The result is significant water conservation, faucets that are certified to meet WaterSense® criteri, and contribution towards maximizing LEED® points.

  1. Look, no hands

Homeowners waste gallons of water everyday by leaving their sink faucets running, but with hands-free electronic faucets you will ensure water is used only when needed.

Moen is dedicated to designing kitchen faucets that fit your life and drive innovation. Our high-performance, water-efficient kitchen faucets have a multi-function spray wand featuring water-saving settings that use up to 32% less water.

  1. On-demand hot water

Tank-less water heaters offer a great way to cut home energy costs without impacting performance. By flash heating water and eliminating tank-water heaters' long cycles you can cut your energy use by 20%.

See that Rinnai tankless water heater there on the wall? Suitcase-sized.  Fits in tight spaces.  Frees up space in your home.  It's a win-win-win situation!

  1. Optimal clean

Flow optimized shower heads can help further reduce water usage in the bathroom. With a 1.75 gpm, versus the industry standard of 2.5, cutting water consumption and energy costs by up to 30%.

With a Moen Eco-Performance shower head, you can use up to 30% less water without sacrificing performance. You'll find products throughout our showering our showering portfolio - including wall-mount, hand shower and rain shower shower heads that are certified to meet EPA WaterSense criteria.

5. Ditch the bottle

Avoid the need of plastic bottles with water filtering faucets. You will save both your wallet from the cost of purchasing bottled water and help unclog waste disposal sites of these increasingly hazardous items.

Earth-conscious customers can now turn to AquaSuite, Moen's single-handle filtering faucet. It's installed in a single hole adjacent to the primary faucet and provides a quick source for filtered water.

6. Keep water in check

It's important to check all water-using products regularly. With the bathroom accounting for roughly 60% of a home's water usage, a leaky toilet or faucet can waste thousands of gallons a year without you knowing it. Moen's Flo, a Smart Home System that monitors and protects your home from leaks and water damage with a single smart water valve -- no additional sensors needed!  It will alert you through the app so you can fix an issue before any damage occurs.

So smart.  Smart Flo.

Our Waterhouse is green.

Is yours?

Your ceilings should never be naked...

Posted on April 14, 2022

Are you sitting down?

Ok.  Look up.  Do you see anything?

We didn't think so.

You are suffering from naked ceiling syndrome.

Waterhouse is here to help.

2022 is an amazing year for lighting.

Six emerging trends to outfit your ceilings with runway-ready, lighting couture.

BOHO TREND -- The BOHO vibe is back but with a vintage modern twist and curved lines.  A perfect example is the Balboa chandelier from Troy Lighting.

TUXEDO KITCHEN LIGHTING -- White kitchens have been #1 for years but we're seeing a return to black kitchen cabinets, range hoods, counters, and island accents.  Color in your kitchen can be edgy, chic, and surprisingly easy to keep clean for families with children.  Tuxedo kitchens are traditionally a mix of black and white but can be modernized to light and dark gray, white and navy, and almost everything in between.

A Tuxedo Kitchen would be complete with a trio of the Blair pendant from MITZI LIGHTING over the island.

MIXED METALS -- Mixing metals is always a timeless and tasteful way to create balance and definition in a room.  Silver and pewter mix well with bronze and black brown metals.

Try the modern and sleek  APOGEE chandelier from TROY LIGHTING.

SOFT SHINE -- If glass globes with exposed bulbs aren't for you, make the shift to fixtures that diffuse light through a lampshade or opaque glass that gives your room a mellow, comforting glow.

The ASHLEIGH chandelier from MITZI LIGHTING shines softly in any room.

BOLD BLACK -- 2022 is screaming out for bold, dark, sultry designs that evoke a high-end experience for anyone that enters the room.

The ELLIOT chandelier from TROY LIGHTING couldn't be bolder.

INDUSTRIAL FARMHOUSE COASTAL.

It sounds like we made this one up but we promise you it's a real trend. Earth tones, layered textures, warm elements and colors from nature bring an easy and welcoming feel to any space.

The Audiophile chandelier from Troy Lighting with a combination of metal, glass and exposed Edison bulbs would be perfect in a kitchen or over a rustic dining room table.  Don't stop there -- this Audiophile style is available in smaller versions including wall sconces so the theme can carry throughout your home.

You may have thought that water and electricity don't mix, but Waterhouse is here to let you know that we should be your first stop for lighting.

We're not just for the bathroom anymore.

April 15th is National Laundry Day (whatever THAT means...)

Posted on April 14, 2022
April 15th is National Laundry Day which got the Waterhouse team dreaming about two things...
1. What if we never had to do laundry ever again?
2. Since #1 is probably not going to happen, what would it be like to fluff and fold in a lovely laundry room like this?
Laundry seems like less of a chore when you pair light and bright walls and shelving with the Kohler GILFORD sink.
Now, if we could just find all of the missing socks...

When it comes time to remodel your laundry room, there are essentials — like the washer and dryer, of course, and storage — that are necessary for functionality. But have you ever considered adding extra features to your design? Maybe a utility sink? You don’t need a lot of square footage to incorporate a washbasin. Just imagine being able to pre-treat stains, hand wash delicates, and rinse away dirt somewhere other than the kitchen or bathroom.

So, what do you need to consider before committing to a laundry room sink? Factors like your budget, the layout, how much space you have to work with, vicinity to the washing machine, and water pressure are all important things that can impact your final decision.

Here's a few tips to follow when choosing your perfect laundry room sink:

  1. Go for a deep basin.

This deep washbasin will give you plenty of space to soak and scrub larger items, like bedding and rugs, even if you have a small laundry room. It can even double as a dog washing station or a place to rinse muddy boots.

  1. Put the sink near the washer and dryer.

When you're planning your "new" laundry room, try to place the sink as close to the washing machine as you possibly can. Try an undermount sink right next to a stacked washer and dryer so pre-treating stains would be a breeze. And bonus: Since you can transfer laundry directly to the washing machine, you don't have to worry about dripping water all over the place.

  1. Take water pressure into account.

A laundry room isn't the place to install delicate fixtures and dainty hardware. Instead, match a utility sink with a heavy-duty industrial sink faucet that will provide an adequate amount of water pressure. Try a semi-pro spring faucet like the Tournant from KOHLER that's equipped to tackle even the messiest of jobs.

  1. Give yourself plenty of space to work.

To save valuable square footage, you might be tempted to settle for a laundry closet instead of a spacious room. However, since washing clothes and linens is a chore that needs to be completed regularly, we recommend giving yourself a little extra space to work. How about a large farmhouse sink but also some counter space that lets you fold and store items like a laundry basket and ironing board.

  1. Use a drain strainer.

The laundry room is the workhorse of your house. Since you'll likely be rinsing out stains, dirt, and maybe even pets in your laundry room sink, you'll need to protect the plumbing from unnecessary clogs. The best way to do that is by using a drain strainer. If you empty (and clean) it out on a regular basis, you'll save yourself from a lot of headaches and a hefty plumbing bill. This strainer from Jaclo is available in 35 finishes!

  1. Consider a wide trough sink.

If you're fortunate to have a spacious laundry room, opting for a wider than average sink will give you more room for pre-soaking and scrubbing out stubborn stains. Plus, a large trough will also come in handy when it's time to water all your houseplants or rinse out a batch of dirty paintbrushes.

  1. Keep accessories nearby.

A laundry room sink is a nice luxury that's made even nicer when all your accessories are nearby. Install shelves above the sink and cabinets above the washer and dryer to keep detergent, stain remover, dryer sheets, and fabric softener. Pro tip: If you don't have enough space for cabinetry, woven baskets are a great alternative that will disguise your laundry supplies while keeping them within arm's reach.

  1. Opt for a farmhouse sink.

Laundry rooms can be both functional and stylish. Check out this apron sink, navy blue cabinets, subway tile backsplash, wood countertops, and a patterned rug. The result? A laundry room that you may never want to leave!

  1. Include a handheld sprayer.

For any laundry room with a sink, a handheld sprayer is a must-have. It will give you unmatched control that you just can't get from a standard faucet alone and will make rinsing out stains and spots easier than ever. The perfect choice?  The new Pet Handshower from Hansgrohe with three different spray patterns that will pamper your pooch like never before.

Very few people absolutely LOVE doing laundry.

Let Waterhouse help you make your laundry room, your laundry closet, your laundry space -- however large it may be -- into a place you no longer dread spending time in.

More ways to make your home green -- the Waterhouse and MOEN way!

11 ways to make your bathroom greener...and we're not talking about paint color

Posted on April 06, 2022

It's WORLD HEALTH DAY.

https://www.who.int/campaigns/world-health-day

The unparalleled value of good health is celebrated on World Health Day on April 7. Spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO), physical, mental, and emotional well-being is promoted and celebrated all over the world on this day.

The most environmentally conscious decision is always to reduce your overall consumption and buy less when possible.

ALEX PAYNE, PUBLICIST, TERRACYCLE

The Waterhouse team wants to share some ways that you can make your bathroom a little bit "greener" so you and your family can breathe easier (literally!) knowing that your footprint is smaller, your water is safer and cleaner, and your wallet isn't any lighter.

  1. Use natural materials for your fixtures

When you’re looking to renovate your bathroom, shop around for cabinets made from natural, organic materials. Natural materials are free from harmful, pollution causing chemicals and can be easily recycled later down the line.

Countertops made from glass, wood, or stone give a prestigious look and are better for the environment than acrylic, MDF or similar materials.

  1. LED bulbs

It isn’t just the water that you can save in your bathroom. LED bulbs can help you make great savings on your electricity bill, which also helps save the planet. LEDs have an 80-90% efficiency. This means that 80-90% of their energy is turned into light rather than heat.

Conventional incandescent bulbs lose 80% of their energy as heat and so are only 20% efficient. LEDs produce a range of lighting effects that can help you create the perfect look and feel, from accent lighting to spotlights for mirrors.

  1. Get rid of the shower curtain

Vinyl shower curtain liners are bad for the planet. They are not recyclable and give off harmful fumes when burned. A study by the Center for Health, Environment & Justice (CHEJ), a non-profit organization who study and recommend ways to prevent chemical threats to health, shows that shower curtains can even be toxic to your health.

Non-PVC shower curtains are available, but if you’re renovating your bathroom, consider a shower screen instead of a curtain. They last longer, are easier to clean and are much kinder to the environment. Glass shower screens can also be easily recycled when the time comes to remodel.

  1. Fix that flush

Toilets use approximately 27% of the water consumed in your home — more than any other appliances or plumbing — including the washing machine, dishwasher, and shower.

Replacing your toilet with a low-flow model can reduce the amount of water flushed away and could save 5,000 liters of water of average. Since 1992, U.S. law has mandated that new toilets sold in the United States be low-flow or low-flush, which means that they consume no more than 1.6 gallons (6 liters) per flush. This means that most toilets available on the market today are low flow.

Look for models that are labelled as high efficiency toilets. These toilets will give you the most water and financial savings. And, in some locations in the United States, sizable rebates are available to water utility customers for these toilets.

  1. Build with a lifetime in mind

Finding small ways to help change the planet is something we should all be doing, it’s important to think about the big picture when you can.

If you’re designing or renovating your bathroom, consider building it with your future in mind. You might be fully mobile now, but in the future, you may not be. Building your bathroom with accessibility in mind, by fitting a wet room, positioning your outlet drains in certain ways etc., you can save on future renovation.

  1. Turn off the tap

There’s no need to keep the tap running when you’re washing your hands or brushing your teeth. If you want to be more eco-friendly in the bathroom, simply turn the tap off until you need that water to rinse.

Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can save 8 gallons of water per day. If you do the same while shaving, you can save 10 gallons of water. Assuming you brush your teeth twice daily and shave 5 times per week, you could save nearly 5,700 gallons per year!

  1. Don’t ignore leaks and drips

Household leaks can waste approximately nearly 900 billion gallons of water annually nationwide. That’s equal to the annual household water use of nearly 11 million homes. In addition to costing homeowners thousands every year, water waste has a massive effect on the environment. Check all your fixtures and connections regularly. If a problem arises, fix it, don’t ignore it! Most leaks are a quick fix that don’t even require calling out a plumber.

  1. Fill your cupboard with recyclables

Natural bathroom products, such as moisturizers, face wipes and shampoos all do their part to help the planet. Using eco-friendly ingredients and recyclable bottles, these products are ideal for creating a greener bathroom. Natural products are also very healthy for your skin and body, so you’ll be looking after yourself as well as the planet.

  1. Clean green

In addition to natural beauty products, you can also get greener cleaning products for your bathroom. Just like your beauty products, choose cleaning products with recyclable bottles where possible.

You can also avoid some of the more damaging cleaning chemicals if you’re prepared to add in a little elbow grease. Vinegar and lemon juice can easily get rid of grime and mildew with a good scrub.

  1. Dry towels naturally

After a nice long soak, towels can be a hassle to dry. But rather than tossing them in the tumble dryer, let them dry naturally in a well aired area. It takes time, for sure, but you’re not likely to need to use the towel again so soon.

Allowing your towels to dry naturally also helps protect your towels. They take less wear and tear than they would if they went around and around in the tumble dryer.

  1. Be mindful about heating water

Did you know that the average household uses around 330 liters of water per day? Heating water for showers, washing up and baths accounts for more than 15% of expenditure on gas.

If you have an old boiler, it’s well worth looking into more modern alternatives, which may be more energy efficient. Combi-boilers tend to be a lot more cost-effective than other options, especially immersion heating. Using a thermostat can also help you to save money.

Only heat water when you need it and try and use it all up. Doing the washing up and then showering is a simple way to maximize your hot water usage.

Waterhouse offers thousands of options for your green bathroom (and for the pink, blue, white, and gray bathrooms, too!

Waterhouse and Kohler -- perfect partners in sustainability

Posted on April 06, 2022
Waterhouse thinks that just one day isn't enough to celebrate World Health Day -- a day to focus global attention on urgent actions needed to keep humans and the planet healthy and foster a movement to create societies focused on well-being.
Extreme weather events, land degradation and water scarcity are displacing people and affecting their health. Pollution and plastics are found at the bottom of our deepest oceans, the highest mountains, and have made their way into our food chain.
Today, we feature the revolutionary water-saving toilet designs from KOHLER.

"There’s is a lot of science behind toilet flushing,” said Dan Halloran, Senior Principal Engineer. “But all the customer truly wants is a clean bowl.”

When the design team took the plunge into swirl flushing, they set out to combine a complete flush with water efficiency. Some existing swirl-flushing toilets don't allocate enough water for flushing, leaving residue in the bowl. Others are guilty of allocating too much, thereby wasting water. Halloran's team was determined to find the "just right" balance.

The design team leaned on Design for Environment principles to look for efficiency during the consumer-use phase. They studied air flow and tweaked system configurations until they found the balance they were looking for, pairing Kohler's powerful AquaPiston® flushing engine with Revolution 360® technology. The team went a step further with CleanCoat™, a surface treatment that repels water and debris and prevents hard water stains.

The result? A toilet that flushes completely each time and stays cleaner longer. That means less toilet scrubbing for consumers and less water use for the environment. "As long-time Kohler engineers," Halloran said, "we consider this technology some of our best work."

Some of the highlights from the KOHLER collection:
San Souci one-piece toilet from KOHLER.
A 1.28-gallon flush provides significant water savings of up to 16,500 gallons per year, compared to a 3.5-gallon toilet, without sacrificing performance.
Upgrade your Corbelle toilet with the addition of the ContinuousClean system which harnesses the antimicrobial cleaning power of off-the-shelf white tablets to automatically fight germs with every flush and keep your bowl clean longer. Also featuring Revolution 360 swirl flushing technology, the Corbelle with ContinuousClean raises toilet cleanliness to a new level. ContinuousClean dispenses a consistent amount of toilet bowl cleaner with every flush to keep your bowl cleaner between flushes. Simply place a cleaning tablet in the tank compartment, set the desired amount with the adjustment dial, and the system does all the work, evenly mixing fresh water with the cleaning agent and dispensing cleaning solution into each flush via the rim jet.
Sculpted with flowing and balanced curves, the Veil® one-piece toilet pairs bold minimalist style with the comfort of personal cleansing. Upgraded to a 17" seating height, this Veil® dual-flush toilet meets ADA code requirements. Pump-assisted flushing delivers peak flush performance every time. A full suite of convenient features includes heated seat, night-light, hands-free opening/closing and automatic flush, plus a touchscreen remote. With emergency backup flushing at the touch of a button, you're always covered in the event of a power outage.

#WorldHealthDay

In the midst of a pandemic, a polluted planet, increasing diseases like cancer, asthma, heart disease, on World Health Day 2022, WHO will focus global attention on urgent actions needed to keep humans and the planet healthy and foster a movement to create societies focused on well-being.

WHO estimates that more than 13 million deaths around the world each year are due to avoidable environmental causes. This includes the climate crisis which is the single biggest health threat facing humanity. The climate crisis is also a health crisis.

We would like to use this opportunity to tell you more about just one of the ways that Waterhouse can help by fostering your health, your home, and your community.

Steam showers are gaining popularity, and there are good reasons for it. Steam has long been associated with many health benefits, and steam showers are a great way to implement steam treatments into your weekly routine.

10 Ways Steam Is Both a Luxury and a Necessity

If these uncertain times have taught us one thing, it’s that physical and mental health are intertwined and will remain a top priority. In a recent survey, 79 percent of respondents said they believe that wellness is important, and 42 percent consider it a top priority. Incorporating wellness into the home is the new norm, and steam showers have become the choice of wellness-seeking homeowners.

Adding a steam shower to your home might be the ticket to your wellness lifestyle. Steam has numerous physical, emotional and mental wellness benefits, but did you know that it’s also a good investment? Let’s explore the top 10 benefits of having a home steam shower.

10 BENEFITS OF STEAM

1. RESPIRATORY

Most people experience a stuffy nose and chest congestion from time to time.  Steam may help reduce those symptoms.  Steam may act as a natural expectorant and help clear nasal passageways and airways. And unlike a public steam room or sauna, you can use your personal steam shower anytime you like...even when you’re sick.

2. EXERCISE RECOVERY

After an intense workout at the gym, the first thing you want to do is jump in the steam room to help ease your aching muscles. Imagine being able to do that at home. With a home steam shower to help with post-exercise recovery, you may just have the stamina to run that extra mile or exercise just a bit longer to be in the best shape of your life.

3. IMPROVED CIRCULATION

Sitting in your steam shower may also help improve circulation. The heat of steam has been shown in some people to dilate blood vessels and capillaries which allows blood to flow more easily, transporting oxygen throughout the body.

4. HEALTHY SKIN

Skin health requires pores being opened allowing the skin to breathe. A steam shower could be the perfect way to sweat out the toxins that may be harmful to our bodies and promote a radiant complexion and more supple skin.

5. STRESS REDUCTION

Given the events of the previous two years, it’s no surprise that 84% of adults suffer from prolonged symptoms from untreated stress. A steam session may help reduce stress and may even help to decrease your cortisol levels, the hormone the body releases in response to stress while promoting a sense of wellbeing.

6. REDUCES JOINT STIFFNESS

In the next 20 years, the number of arthritis-afflicted individuals is expected to skyrocket to 78 million – or more than a quarter of all adults in the U.S.! Incorporating wellness into your home could help you ease some of those symptoms. Using a steam shower may help loosen up joints, increase flexibility, and reduce joint discomfort.

7. ADDS VALUE TO YOUR HOME

Updating bathrooms is often one of the first renovation projects property owners undertake when looking to increase a home's appraised value. Adding a steam shower may raise the value of your property by 31%.

8. SELF-CONTAINED

A steam shower takes up no extra space. Whereas a sauna needs its own separate enclosure, a steam shower is installed as part of an existing shower enclosure. Added space is not a requirement.

9. FORM AND FUNCTION

Steam showers are custom designed to fit any style or aesthetic. Stylish features include natural materials for tiles, shower seating, and high-tech controls. Smart designs like aromatherapy steam heads elevate your steam shower experience while also bringing wellness into your home.

10. SAVES TIME AND MONEY ON SPA MEMBERSHIPS

Wouldn't it be nice to enjoy a good steam without having to drive someplace and pay for access? An in-home steam shower provides you with all the benefits in the comfort of your own home. You'll save time and money on spa memberships that you might not even use.

Because a home steam shower is typically installed in an existing shower space, bringing the wellness of steam into your home is now easier than ever.

Ask your Waterhouse sales team member about steam showers systems like Mr. Steam and enclosures from Basco and Splendor the next time you're in our neighborhood.
