Mid-century Modern = Grass on the walls + jewelry on the ceiling

Posted on July 22, 2022

Okay.  So we're not putting REAL grass on the walls and there's not TECHNICALLY any jewelry hanging from the ceiling but we certainly got your attention, didn't we?!

What we're trying to say is that design can be off-the-wall and fun.

Whimsical.

Interesting.

No more cookie cutter bathrooms.  That should be our new Waterhouse motto.

Today's unique style?

Mid-century Modern.

The 3 pillars are:

FUNCTIONALITY.

COLOR.

SHAPE.

Mid-century Modern design principles don't live only in the living room.  You can bring that same feel into every room in your home -- including the powder room!

Mix materials.

Harsh metals often blend with lighter wood—it’s all about blending the traditional with the nontraditional. You can experiment with different fabrics and textiles, mix metals -- you'll be blending tradition with modernism, which is what the style is all about.

Mid-century modern design is all about functionality. In a mid-century modern home, everything is organized, and the lines are clean.

Since the mid-century modern style is all about lines, then shape must play an important part of the process. This sentiment is, in fact, true! Geometric shapes are staples of the mid-century modern design because of their clean linework.

How do we put this puzzle together at Waterhouse?

Using this small bathroom as inspiration, we came up with these ingredients.  Stir them all together and you'll have the most delicious design!

The KOHLER VEIL Pedestal Lavatory Sink

The KOHLER BRAZN one-piece toilet

The KOHLER ARCHER mirrored medicine cabinet

KOHLER PURIST wall-mount lavatory faucet with cross handles in Vibrant Brushed Modern Brass

KOHLER PURIST Glass Shelf

KOHLER PURIST Towel Ring in Vibrant Brushed Moderne Brass

KOHLER PURIST Toilet Paper Holder in Vibrant Brushed Moderne Brass

And here's that jewelry on the ceiling that we were talking about earlier...

The WHITESTONE wall sconce from Hudson Valley Lighting Group in Aged Brass.

And now for the grass on the walls...

Grasscloth is a handcrafted piece of interwoven exotic grasses and is a decorating staple of the 1960's and 1970's. different types of grasscloth materials, such as hemp, jute, rushcloth and sisal are very popular wallpaper and exist in a variety of designs and functions. For natural and modern wallcovering, grasscloth adds much desired warmth and texture to your home.

Phillip Jeffries Manila Hemp Kelly Green Wallpaper

Patterned grasscloth wallpaper has not only aesthetic beauty but true functionality as well.  Besides adding texture, grasscloth also absorbs noise and covers any wall imperfections.

Schumacher Ripple Sisal Grass wallpaper

Eco-friendly, renewable, and chic, grasscloth wallpaper is constructed from natural fibers and are usually 100 percent recyclable.

Schumacher Acanthus Stripe Sisal Turmeric Wallpaper

It's a small bathroom.  Go BOLD.  Be BRAVE.  Have FUN.

Let Waterhouse help.

This Affordable Swap Instantly Upgrades Your Bathroom (Even if You Rent)

It's a total myth that you have to spend a lot to change the look of your space.

Not quite ready for a full bathroom re-model?

Why not start with just your bathroom faucet?

You might be dealing with something like this...

Or this...

Wouldn't it be SO much better if you could swap that out for THIS???

With the right product and a bit of know-how, you can replace your bathroom faucet for an instant upgrade. If a new faucet is the DIY project you never knew you needed, Waterhouse bath & kitchen studio can help with that!

First, you should know some basic tips for choosing the right faucet. You'll need to determine whether your sink or countertop has one, two, or three holes. That will help you understand which type of faucet to buy.

Here's what you'll need to check...

Do you have a single hole?

Or a 4-inch center set?  That's just a fancy way of saying three holes that are close together.

Or, you might need an 8-inch widespread faucet.

Once you've figured out what kind of faucet you NEED, now it's time to figure out what style you WANT. Waterhouse has an entire section of faucets at varying price points, ranging in style from modern and sleek to traditional. The more refined styles look great in bathrooms with a contemporary, minimal aesthetic, and the models with soft curves look amazing in bathrooms with a farmhouse or rustic look. And don't even get us STARTED on the number of finish choices...

Here are some examples:

Kohler DEVONSHIRE

Traditional Single hole

Traditional Center set

Traditional Widespread

KOHLER HINT

Modern Single hole

Modern Center set

Modern Widespread

This weekend DIY project might seem daunting, but it is actually really easy!

And if you rent and are worried about your landlord making a fuss, simply keep the old faucet and reinstall it when you leave. In the meantime, enjoy the bathroom you have always dreamed of.

Let Waterhouse help you make your house (or your rental) a Waterhouse.

Midcentury Modern -- Creating a bathroom that Don Draper would be proud to use

Posted on June 24, 2022

Waterhouse isn’t just a pretty face…

We’re also a wealth of knowledge and we LOVE to share that with you!

We’re going to pick a topic weekly and tell (and show!) you everything you need to know.

This week?

Midcentury Modern.

What is that??? Wood paneling? Black and white tile?  Color mixed in? Interesting lighting fixtures?

YES!

What does that mean?

How do I make it work in my space?

Waterhouse has answers to these questions….

What is Midcentury Modern?

Midcentury modern style originated during the middle of the 20th century and embodied the needs and wants of the population of that time. Midcentury modern design is rooted in functionality, clean lines, and simplicity, which reflected the world at that time. Homes were more linear, focused on maintaining a nuclear family unit and as such, the furniture design echoed this environment.

Unlike frillier pieces or those filled with ornate detailing, midcentury modern furniture and design is much more straightforward in nature. The need and desire for functional, simplistic furniture and decor in our homes was a rebellion against the ornate traditions from decades before, and a way for families to embrace a more modern, organic way of living.

Most authentic midcentury modern furniture is made from teak. Teak was preferred for its richness in color and durability. Rosewood and oak were the other commonly used woods, mostly in case pieces like tables, desks, and storage cabinets.

But wood was by no means the only material present in the creation of midcentury modern pieces. Materials were critical to midcentury design – there was a lot of wood, metal, glass, and vinyl, often used in tension with each other to create a unique look. These materials were often used to create furnishings in curved shapes. The famous Eames chair is a hallmark of this. Other unique shapes took hold through curved and almost round sofas, odd-shaped coffee tables, and even geometric shapes that felt angular and clean."

Color was also a major component of midcentury style, using color in ways we didn't see before, often either as a bold accent or to make a piece of furniture stand out singularly in a room.

So that’s what it is and what it means.

Now, how do you bring midcentury modern design into your home without feeling like you’re building a TV set or curating a museum?

Start small. Like a bathroom renovation. We can DEFINITELY help with that.

Embrace Wood Paneling

Wait…wood paneling? You want me to embrace wood paneling?!

Wood paneling is kind of like cottage cheese; you either love it or hate it, there’s no middle ground.

Some think it's far too reminiscent of what could be considered a design faux pas of years past, but when constructed to perfection it can be a stunning addition to any bathroom. Try using it to frame your shower or line the walls and it'll serve as an instant time portal (in a good way!) to mid-century modern style.

Focus on Lighting

You can infuse a good dose of mid-century modern flair through lighting alone. The oblong wall-mounted lights here are sleek and play beautifully off the sharp black hardware, mirror frame, and faucets. If you're going to spend money on one thing for refreshing a bathroom, lighting can do so much.

Don't Be Shy to Experiment with Color

Pink, teal, olive green, and orange are just a few of the fun shades that were seen during the decades that mid-century modern covered. If you have a particular shade, like this fun bubblegum pink, that you're too timid to try in another room, coat the walls of your bathroom in it. You'll be staying true to your style and incorporating some extra fun tones.

When it comes to picking a color scheme, choose a muted palette. Multiple muted greens and mustardy yellows together with warm-colored wood instantly evoke the midcentury modern look. A touch of turquoise, perhaps in an artwork, will provide the finishing touch.

Experiment With Shapes and Sizes

The different circumferences of circular shapes reflected in everything from the mirror to the cabinet pulls are a chic complement to the angles of the vanity and tiles used on the floor. This is a nice little added bit of detail that's reminiscent of mid-century modern design. The selection of neutral colors also means that this bathroom will stay timeless for decades.

This focus on items being only as large as they need to be to function is a big part of why mid-century modern spaces feel so open and bright. Smaller, simpler pieces of furniture mean there's more negative space in a room, and that space becomes part of the decor.

For those who love the shades of midcentury modern but aren't interested in painting a whole bathroom in them, turn to your flooring. This powder room makes a convincing case for pink tile. If renovating your floors is completely out of the question, you can get a similar effect with stick-on backsplashes or an accent wall of tiles.

Cover Your Walls with Pops of Color

Get Groovy with Patterns

While this bathroom may not look like the others, its dark wood vanity and wild patterns make it a fit for being in a lineup of midcentury modern inspired bathrooms. Think of the groovy patterns and prints that received love in the '60s and '70s and soon enough you'll be considering pasting up some cool wallpaper of your own.

Make a Minimalist Mark

Many midcentury modern palettes include bright and bold tones, but muted color schemes are equally as popular. If you prefer quiet shades in your bathroom, stick with beiges, browns, grays, blacks, and metallics. A clean, simple bathroom like this is also reminiscent of Scandi-inspired spaces.

Create a Warm and Cool-Toned Space

Normally, warm and cool tones are separated from one another to prevent clashing, but like every so-called style rule, it's meant to be broken. The colder gray on the walls works a treat with the warm toned wood. With the addition of the black cast iron fixtures, the space feels finished and pulled together.

Blend Classic with Trendy

The wood vanity and tessellating tile make this bathroom an ultra-chic nod to midcentury modern. This room spins towards Cali cool and shows how malleable this design look can be and how it can be updated over time.

 Keep It Fresh and Updated

A wooden vanity and sleek black accents create a pretty nod to midcentury modern. Although this bathroom features some characteristics from that time, it feels updated and fresh thanks to things like the subway tile and more!

There you have it.

Midcentury modern simplified.

Water is the driving force of all nature.

LEONARDO DA VINCI

Waterhouse bath & kitchen studio located at 125 E. Indiana Avenue in Perrysburg, Ohio, has been operating as the elegant showroom arm of Maumee Supply since 1976.  Lifelong Perrysburg residents, the Williams family, began their plumbing journey in 1953.

Almost 70 years of living in Perrysburg.

Almost 70 years of working in Perrysburg.

Almost 70 years of providing the residents of Perrysburg and the neighboring communities with the most exceptional products, sold by the most knowledgeable people.

A 70-year legacy that we would like to commemorate in a very big way!

After five months of planning and waiting and waiting some more, we have finally gotten approval from the City of Perrysburg and have begun our 16.5’ x 30’ mural project on the east side of the Waterhouse showroom.

This mural will be a not-so-subtle nod to the importance of water in our everyday lives.  The importance of water to our very survival.  The beauty and the raw power of water and its symbiotic relationship to humanity and nature and even industry in hues of blue and green and gray on our wall. Themes of business and community, of nature and art, will appear in brushstrokes on our wall.

We want this mural to be not an advertisement for Waterhouse – no logos or even our name appear within the borders of the proposed mural – but a stunning addition to the outdoor gallery that the City of Perrysburg has already begun to cultivate with its sculpture garden and other prominent pieces of outdoor art within the city limits.

We want this to be a project that the entire community can share, finding the beauty in the change to the landscape – a white wall magically transformed into a lasting community treasure.

Our artist, Terry A. Burton, and his team put the first coats of primer on the wall today.  Paint and materials have been generously donated by our local Perrysburg Sherwin Williams showroom.

Projected completion date is June 24, 2022, with a ribbon-cutting (of sorts) to follow.

We are so eager to watch this process unfold and to share this event with the residents of Perrysburg and art-lovers (and art-appreciators, too!) everywhere.  Onlookers are welcome!

For those that can’t visit our showroom in person, we’ll be sharing daily progress on Facebook and Instagram.

Memorial Day isn't just for fireworks and hotdogs...

Posted on May 27, 2022

Many of us look forward to Memorial Day weekend for the backyard barbecues, summer cocktails, and end of the school year fun.  In the middle of the s'mores, backyard slip and sliding and gardening projects, we can't forget what the holiday is really about: honoring the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

Here's a list of some easy things that you, your family, and your friends can do together to celebrate and honor our fallen heroes. Not only is it an opportunity to teach kids important facts about Memorial Day and how it is different from Veteran's Day, but it's also a way for adults to take a step back, count their blessings and brush up on America's history.

Here, you'll find a list of new things to do on Memorial Day — some fun virtual activities can be enjoyed right at home, while others may take you out into the world to nearby parks, cemeteries and donation centers.

1. Take a tour of a National Park.

Over 400 national park sites exist in the U.S. and each of them offer a unique look at America. Plan a tour of your nearest national park and discover the history of these landmarks.
2. Help build a home for a veteran.

With a donation to Building Homes for Heroes, you can help house an injured veteran. The organization builds and modifies homes for veterans, allowing them and their families to live mortgage-free.

3. Shop at a veteran-owned business.

4. Brush up on American history.

If there was a time to do it, it's now. Before diving into your family's Memorial Day activities, refresh your own memory about the reason why we celebrate Memorial Day and how it differs from Veteran's Day.

5. Write letters to soldiers and their families.

To your kids, Memorial Day may just be another day off from school. To remind them that it is much more than that, have them write handwritten notes to active American soldiers and veterans. Once your letters are complete, bring them to any A Million Thanks drop-off locations to guarantee a safe, speedy arrival.

6. Put together care packages for soldiers.

Even though Operation Gratitude encourages people to get join their efforts year-round, they host several events during the Memorial Day weekend. There are many ways to get involved: Convince your kids to donate their Beanie Babies to kids in combat zones, sew special ties to keep troops cool during the hot summer months or a host a neighborhood drive to collect toiletries for soldiers.
7. Create patriotic chalk art.
memorial day activities

Gather the kids in your neighborhood and create a patriotic-inspired mural or just write out a simple thank you to local veterans, using sidewalk chalk.

8.  Take a moment of silence.

No matter where you live, take a moment of silence at 3 p.m. local time for The National Moment of Remembrance. For at least one minute, send your thanks, love and prayers to active soldiers, veterans, and the many men and women who died serving our country.

9. Attend a Memorial Day parade.

Get the full-fledged holiday experience by cheering on your town's marching band, veterans, and local organizations at the nearest parade. Check online to find the parade closest to you.

10. Donate flowers for soldiers' graves.

Flowers - Memorial Day Flowers

Even if your weekend is full of family fun, make sure you still pay your respects to the fallen troops with a donation to Memorial Day Flowers, a national foundation that places a flower on the graves of soldiers. A small donation of $5, for example, honors five soldiers with a red rose in front of their headstone.

11. Visit your local cemetery.

Just because you don't live close to the Arlington National Cemetery doesn't mean you should nix a Memorial Day cemetery visit altogether. Volunteer to dress graves at a local or military cemetery with flowers and flags. Or simply swing by to pay your respects to our country's heroes.

The Waterhouse showroom will be closed Saturday-Monday in observance of Memorial Day and we'll be spending time with those closest to us.  We hope that you have a weekend of happy things too!

You want me to put a toilet in my garden???

Posted on May 27, 2022

Toilets in the garden? Bathtubs on the back porch?

You’ve just purchased your new sink, toilet, and bathtub from Waterhouse (thank you, by the way – we loved working with you!) and you’re trying to figure out what to do with your old bathroom fixtures. True, your contractor or installer can probably haul them away for you, but what if you want some other ideas?

The Waterhouse team scoured the internet for the best and brightest ways to recycle and reuse all of them.

Look at what we found…

Container Garden

A used toilet makes an excellent container garden (as does a sink or a bathtub) if you're not squeamish about displaying it in your yard. Grow plants in the bowl and in the tank, after taking off the tank's lid. Sinks of all kinds and bathtubs can keep the repurposed theme going in a very whimsical garden.

Bird Bath

Create a Birdbath from a Salvaged Sink

Design a unique birdbath out of a vintage, wall-mount sink, or any sink, for that matter. This fun DIY project will add charm to your yard and create a fun hangout for your feathered friends.

https://www.hgtv.com/outdoors/outdoor-spaces/create-a-birdbath-from-a-salvaged-sink

Garden Chair

Use the toilet as a garden chair, placing a waterproof cushion on it to create a softer seat. If you have more than one used toilet, use them to create a seating area where people can sit and chat. Attach an umbrella to each toilet to accentuate the playful look. OR, like we’ve done in the Waterhouse showroom, why not turn an old clawfoot tub into a sofa?

Drinking Bowl

Ordinarily, you don’t encourage your pets to drink out of the toilet, but a used toilet can make a useful water bowl. Fill the toilet with water and leave it outside so your dog has a source of water while in the yard.

Art Piece

Unleash your creative side and turn your used toilet into a piece of art. Paint the toilet any way you like, and add embellishments to create a piece of conceptual art if you like. Waterhouse does this.  Remember World Toilet Day 2021?  We're gearing up for the second go-around on November 19, 2022 -- stay tuned for more information!

Material for Mosaics

Crushing up a used porcelain toilet or sink will provide material for mosaics.

Save yourself a trip to the big box home store

Crush up your old fixtures and put into concrete for driveways and garden paths or use the porcelain instead of mulch in your planting beds.

Create an outdoor potting station

Who says you need a plumber to make an outdoor sink functional? Here, a recycled sink fits nicely in this wooden island and is useful for prepping veggies picked fresh from the garden on their way to your table or for creating the most beautiful floral arrangements. Use your hose or rain barrel to fill the sink as you need water.

Fun for the under-10 set

Kids love playing with water, and water toys and tables are a perfect way to spend a warm afternoon. If you have the skills, build your own with your old kitchen sink. A simple table frame is painted a pretty blue and has a shelf for toy storage, making water play as stylish and functional as it is fun.

Pretty Party Cooler

Are you hosting a backyard party soon? It’s hard to keep bottles and cans cold during the summer, so maybe you would like to recreate the look below. Make use of your old bathtub and fill it with ice. Then add the drinks inside. They will stay cold all night long!

If you’re not feeling very “Pinterest-y,” you can always:

Donate to Habitat for Humanity https://www.mvhabitat.org/restore/restore/

If you have a vintage toilet, you check with local architectural salvage company – if your piece is in good condition, it could be useful to someone else!

There.  We did it.  We filled up two weekends of your time with fun outdoor projects, made you feel so green and crafty, and kept all of your old fixtures out of a dumpster.

We'd love to see what you come up with.

Bathrooms scarier than any horror movie...

Posted on May 12, 2022
It's Friday the 13th and the Waterhouse team would like to slowly ease you into our tour of the scariest bathrooms that we've ever seen.

Tim Burton, esteemed director of Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Corpse Bride, and The Nightmare Before Christmas, just to name a few, could have personally designed this powder room.
000

We're calling it "Too Much of a Good Thing."

Don't let your bathroom renovation turn into a nightmare.

Let Waterhouse help. We'll be gentle. We promise.
Next stop on our Friday the 13th bathroom tour is this color explosion that might just  make your blood run cold.
Here, orange wallpaper, dark wood, an orange Formica countertop, dated tile floor, and a wooden toilet seat could move from the dark side and come into the light with just a few tweaks...
What if we turned this nightmare inside out by choosing stunning shades of gray and orange and adding simple gold fixtures and accessories.
Wallpaper doesn't have to be scary either.
Be brave.
Go bold.
Let Waterhouse hold the (metaphorical) flashlight for you.

Brace yourself for this one...
A painted black and white checked optical illusion vortex portal to who-knows-where could make potty training nearly IMPOSSIBLE for even the most seasoned parent...

Call us fraidy-cats, but our hearts beat faster (in a much different way) when you show us a lovely blue and cream repeating pattern on this lovely lavatory floor.
Waterhouse will choose the non-portal painted floor every time.
Every. Single. Time.
Friday the 13 is scary enough.
No one should be subjected to shades of seafoam, mint, and jade all at the same time. In the same bathroom, no less.

Mint isn't just for ice cream anymore. Check out this soothing (not scary at all!) mint vanity paired with black framed Pivot mirrors, crisp white countertops, and polished chrome fixtures.
The Waterhouse team wouldn't ever shy away from a lovely lavatory like this. Even if the lights went out all of a sudden and the phone went dead.
How do you turn an orange and green horror show into a romantic comedy?
Take away the rust shag carpet, the busy tile and the avocado sink and bathtub. Add a polished gold faucet, mirror, wall sconce, and drawer pulls, mute the rust to a soft peach on the vanity and add the most delightful wallpaper that the Waterhouse team has ever seen.
Bathrooms shouldn't be scary.
Even on Friday the 13th.
No Friday the 13th tour of scary bathrooms would be complete without a shot of this glowing red toilet straight from our nightmares.

Waterhouse agrees that a soft glow at night keeps the bathroom safer (and cleaner, too!) but we prefer the soothing blue hue from Kohler's CACHET Nightlight toilet seat.

Some good rules of thumb...
Choose blue over red for your toilet seat nightlight color.
Don't wear high heels in the woods.
Don't pick up hitchhikers.
Don't open the door for strangers.
All good rules to follow.

Happy Friday the 13th from the Waterhouse team.
