Bathroom
1. Collect ideas
a. Look through today’s magazines to get an idea of the “look” you would like to achieve.
2. Some questions to think about if only replacing a few items in the bathroom
a. What kind of spread is your current faucet? Single hole, 4”, or 8”? (Faucet spread is measured by center of handle to center of handle)
b. What size is your current sink? (Or what size is the sink opening in counter?)
c. If replacing vanity top, what size is your current vanity top?
d. What size is your current tub/shower? Is the drain on the right or left?
e. What is the toilet's rough in? Typically standard is 12” but some toilets have a 10” or a 14” rough-in. (Rough-in is measured from wall to bolt caps on current toilet)
3. Resale value
a. Remodeling a bathroom can increase the resale value of the house. Here are some key things to keep in mind if you are thinking about remodeling your bathroom for resale value:
- Neutral colored fixtures
- Dual sinks (typically in master bathroom)
- Recessed medicine cabinet and ample storage
- Shower light
- Dimmer switches (typically in master bathroom)
- Solid surfaces

Kitchens
1. Collect ideas
a. Look through today’s magazines to get an idea of the “look” you would like to achieve.
2. Think about the functionality of your kitchen
a. How do you utilize your kitchen?
b. Consider how much time you spend in the kitchen.
3. Decide what your goal is for your kitchen?
a. Do you want your kitchen to be high in design? Do you want your kitchen a place for gourmet cooking? Do you want it to be children friendly? Do you want it to be a place for gatherings? Or is the remodel to help increase resale value? Ect.
b. What bothers you about your current kitchen and how would you like it changed? What do you currently like about your kitchen?
4. If replacing just the sink and/or faucet:
a. What size is your current sink? (standard is 33”x22”)
b. If only replacing faucet, how many hole(s) do you currently have in your sink or countertop? (If faucet has plate, their maybe holes underneath the plate as well) Don’t forget to include side sprays, soap dispenser, ect.
5. Think about what you are going to do during remodeling
a. If completely remodeling kitchen, think about how construction is going to affect your lifestyle. Think about possibly staying at relatives, friends, or even a hotel if you find out it maybe a long process.
